Some 70km north of Perth, along the Indian Ocean coastline, there’s a place called Yanchep, the site of an ambitious short-lived real estate cum tourism project by the infamous Mr Alan Bond in the 70s. Now Yanchep is back to its old self, and this is a great spot to view the Indian Ocean.

Well, there’s a grim history here too, so I’m intrigued.

A stroll down the sand dunes, and wa-hey, the Indian Ocean – go that way for 8000km, and you’d hit the southern tip of South Africa!

I must admit, pretty impressive vegetation here, and there’s a famous rock right there.

This spot is called Two Rocks, and this is one of the duo. The other rock is to the right, a bit far and I can’t get a good shot of it, no thanks to my 28mm prime lens! Ah well …

In any case, fresh seaweeds litter the beach.

Must have been very colourful when alive underwater. I guess some violent surfs ripped them out and dumped them here.

Anyway this part of the beach is a ‘dog exercise zone’, and they have kindly provided biodegradable plastic bags to make sure you clean up your best friends’s poop. How nice.

Yanchep’s Two Rocks done, we push on in search of the famous Western Australian wildflowers. We take a minor road into the bush, off Route 60.

And soon we hit paydirt!

There is this small window for the wildflowers to bloom — soon after the winter rains, just before the dry scorching summer when bushfires abound … like now.

I must say the whole spectacle is quite overwhelming. Definitely an Allahu-Akbar moment!

Like the colourful flowers are being pasted onto the background bush.

I only know this is the famous banksia, first time I see one in the wild, alive.

In any case, a proper picture must be composed for posterity.

It’s a pity we have to leave, still a long way to go and much to do today.

Cervantes or bust! By the way, 4000km down that road and you reach Darwin.
